Marriages involving foreign nationals in Egypt are registered at the Foreigners' Marriage Office, Ministry of Justice. The process requires meeting a set of conditions and providing documents whose details vary according to the foreign party's nationality.
Basic requirements
- Both parties must attend in person or be represented under a valid power of attorney issued for this purpose.
- The foreign party's residency in Egypt must be lawful and valid.
- A certificate of no impediment (or its equivalent) issued by the foreign party's embassy.
- Completion of the required medical examination before registration.
Documents and legalisation
Documents issued abroad usually require a certified translation and legalisation by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Any gap or error in the translation or legalisation delays the process, so it is best to review the complete file before submission.
After registration
Once the marriage is registered, marriage-based residency procedures can begin at the Passports, Immigration and Nationality Administration, and the marriage can also be registered with the competent authorities in the foreign party's country where necessary.
